Neuropsychiatrists practice in the area where psychiatry and neurology overlap. People who have brain disorders, injuries or lesions that cause certain kinds of behaviour need psychiatric treatment for the emotional and behavioural components. However, they also need treatment of the brain disorder. Typical responsibilities of neuropsychiatrists include assessing and assisting people recovering from strokes, administering brain scans and other neurocognitive tests, consulting with pharmaceutical companies that develop drugs affecting the central nervous system and providing expert testimony during court trials.
