Immunology is a branch of science that deals with the study of the immune system. An immunology expert or immunologist is a highly educated research professional whose job is to address all immunological issues concerning an individual. He usually does research in a laboratory, where he performs clinical tests, diagnosis, and evaluations to better understand the immune system. To be a certified and licensed immunologist, one must have a bachelor's degree in the sciences, a doctor of medicine degree, a medical license, and series of training specializing in immunology.Immunologists work in a range of settings, including hospitals, private practice, diagnostic immunology laboratories, research centres and universities.

A person must visit an immunologist in cases of severe, life threatening allergy, when food or occupational allergy is suspected, if immunotherapy for treatment of allergic diseases is contemplated, in asthma, when there is evidence of continuing poor control, despite regular use of asthma medication.
