A surgeon who carries out procedures on a range of chest problems which includes cancerous growths, e.g. lung cancer tuberculosis lung abscess (empyema) deformity of the chest wall and pneumothorax (collapsed lung) is called a thoracic surgeon. He/she will perform surgical procedures such as surgical repair of the chest wall lobectomy (removal of a section of the lung) pneuonectomy (complete removal of the lung) heart bypass (cardiothoracic) removal of soft tissue sarcomas.
Thoracic surgeons with special training may also handle congenital heart defects in children. These surgeons who work with children are required to have special training in paediatric care.
