Comprehensive eye examination consists of

Vision test
  1. Refraction test
  2. Slit Lamp examination
  3. IOP measurement
  4. Fundus examination
  5. Detailed examination of affected part

At the end of these complete tests on your eye, your doctor/surgeon can identify the cause of your vision disorder and suggest you remedial treatments

Eye Care Tips
  1. Eat well, sleep well and exercise
  2. Read in proper light
  3. Prevent PC and mobile-induced eyestrain
  4. Watch TV  from a distance

General Eye Care

With today's busy lifestyle, demands and growing pollution all around, taking some precautions as a routine habit can go a long way to protect our eyes. Here are very basics

The Do's
  1. Get an yearly checkup by an ophthalmologist especially children, diabetics, hypertensive patients.
  2. For any eye problem only consult an ophthalmologist only
  3. Wear protective eyewear if engaged in hazardous occupational work.
  4. In cases of foreign body injury or chemical injury wash your eyes thoroughly with clean water and then consult your eye specialist immediately.

The Don'ts
  1. Avoid smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol. They are known to cause progression of cataract and other optic nerve disorders.
  2. Avoid staring at a PC screen all day take breaks in between to prevent eye strain.
  3. Do not watch TV in the dark and do not sit to close to the TV screen (at least 5 feet away)
  4. Do not use eye ointments or drops without a doctor's prescription.

Suggested Routine Eye Check up Time line (Age Wise)
  1. 0-3 years - If squint or premature birth, the child should be taken to a qualified ophthalmologist.
  2. 3-5 years - check-up for any refractive error.
  3. 12-14 years - If the child complains about headache or pain in the eye, consult the doctor for vision check up.
  4. 24-30 years - In this age of electronic devices and polluted atmosphere, one eyed check-up is recommended to find out the possibility of Glaucoma, Computer Vision Syndrome, Dry Eyes etc.
  5. 40 years - A comprehensive eye examination is recommended at least once a year for Correction of near vision defects, Checking for Cataract, Checking Intra Ocular Pressure, Checking the status of Retina, especially if you are Diabetic and Checking the Optic Nerve.

Child Eye Care
Warning Signs of Vision Problems in Children:- 
  1. Squinting, rubbing or closing one eye
  2. Constantly reading close to the face
  3. Tilting the head to focus on objects
  4. One or both eyes turn in or out
  5. Redness or tearing in eyes
  6. Premature birth
  7. Developmental delays
  8. Family history of "lazy eye" or "thick glasses"
  9. Any disease that affects the whole body

Role as a parent
Vision is very important to the development and education of a child. And parents must be extra-vigilant because a child may not realize that his vision is not normal. The onus is on the parents to notice the signs of a vision problem and to follow up with a visit to the eye specialist.

I had suffered from a retinal detachment which occurred after an eye injury. Then I had my surgery done and the operation was quite succesful.
