Menstruation is the monthly bleeding in females. Briefly, when uterus sheds it’s lining and it flows out through vagina along with blood every month for a period of 3 to 5 days, this process is called menstruation. As during menstrual cycle certain important hormones are released by the body which is important for women health. So, regular menstrual cycle is very important for a female. The age when menstrual cycle starts is generally around 8 to 15 years or it may start after 2 years of breasts development. Once periods start, it generally comes every month for 3 to 5 days. In some cases, it stays for 2 to 7 days which is also considered normal.
As menstrual cycle has direct connection with female’s health, ladies should always observe their periods for any change or irregularity to know unpredictable menstrual bleeding or any change in ovulation. It is important to keep track of all these information so that females know what might be causing their health problems. If menstrual cycles are not regular, it means ovaries have stopped producing normal amounts of estrogen which is not good for health. The reason for irregular menstrual cycles might be hormonal disturbance which is related to PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) or reproductive organs.
Menstrual cycle is a whole month process and menstruation is just the last phase of one cycle which is, generally, a period of 3 to 5 days. During menstrual cycle, female hormone called estrogen is released which is required for female’s health and building of strong bones. This hormone causes ovaries to produce eggs and release them through the fallopian tubes. This is called ovulation. The hormone named progesterone is responsible for the growth and thickness of the lining of uterus. After ovulation, uterus lining is shed through the vagina during the menstrual period. When the egg gets fertilized after the ovulation period, the lining of uterus doesn’t break causing no menstruation or period that month leading to pregnancy.
There is phase in a female’s lifetime when menstruation process stops completely, this is called menopause. After menopause, ovulating process doesn’t work anymore indicating that a woman can not get pregnant. Usually the age for menopause is between 45 to 55 five but due to certain surgeries or long term treatments, it may happen earlier. The duration when menopause starts is called menopausal transition.
There are many causes responsible for irregularities in menstruation process such as:
- Heavy exercise and weight loss can disturb menstruation cycle.
- Even weight gain or obesity can be the reason of missed or irregular periods.
- If menstruation is missed, it might be an indication of pregnancy.
- Another reason for delay in menstruation can because of breast feeding.
- When ovaries stop functioning normally, it can cause premature ovarian failure.
- Stress or depression or long time illness can disrupt menstruation cycle.
- Uterine fibroids which is a noncancerous growths of the uterus causes excessive bleeding and heavy menstrual periods.
Even though, it is not possible to eradicate all the causes of menstruation related problems
completely but woman must consult health care provider for any menstrual cycle related problem. If there is any kind of abnormal bleeding, headaches
, disturbed sleep patterns
, back cramps, heavier breast or soreness then they must go for treatment on time because if such health problems are not treated well on time, it could lead to some serious health problems such as cancer
or fibroids. To avoid such menstrual problems, females must keep themselves healthy physically as well as mentally.
