An overview of laser skin resurfacing
Posted on Feb 19, 2016
When it comes to reviving your skin's natural beauty there are a lot of options available for your preferences. Laser resurfacing is one such method that has been gaining a lot of positive attention both from cosmetic surgeons and patients alike. For those who have not tried it and are looking for better ways to rejuvenate their skin, here are ten facts on laser resurfacing.
Laser resurfacing is a procedure that makes use of a laser tool in order to improve the appearance and texture of the skin, while keeping it healthy at the same time. It gives you that renewed freshness and youthfulness to your face as it effectively erases impurities.
What the lasers do in this procedure is that it addresses both the outer and inner layers of the skin. It acts on the outer layers by removing the dead skin cells lining the surface, while at the same time it also painlessly stimulates improvement in the internal layers of the skin such as collagen and elastin. These two different approaches are considered to be ablative or wounding treatment, the one which acts on a superficial level and non-ablative or the non-wounding laser treatment which acts on underlying structures.
Skin issues or imperfections that you can treat with laser resurfacing includes fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, warts, skin discolouration, certain skin growth and even tattoos. Laser resurfacing is not only limited to treating issues on the face. It can also be used on other parts of your body.
The process can be performed under local sedation but the patient would still need some assistance after the procedure. The good thing about this procedure is that it can give you a younger looking face without the downtime that you get from surgical interventions. However there are also cases where a general anaesthetic is also used depending on the case of the patient and the assessment of the dermatologist.
Those who can be considered to be good candidates for laser resurfacing are those suffering from superficial or light wrinkles. If you are dealing with unrelenting acne scars, dark spots and uneven pigmentation you can also largely benefit from this procedure. It is however not advised for those who have acne or cystic acne, dark-coloured skin individuals, and unfortunately so, it does not work with stretch marks. Laser resurfacing also does not prevent new lines, discolouration and other skin imperfections from forming.
There are two types of lasers used in laser resurfacing, these are CO2 (carbon dioxide) and Erbium. CO2 laser resurfacing utilizes short pulsed light waves that are delivered to target areas in a scanning pattern. Aside from treating the usual problems it can also lighten birthmarks, minimizes enlarged oil glands on your nose, and can even prevent or help treat skin cancer.
Erbium on the other hand actually works better for those who have darker skin. It removes superficial to moderately deep lines with very fine precision as it particularly follows the problem area.
The length of time to heal can vary from the patient to patient depending on the width and depth of the area being treated. It can usually take a week to a month to heal. Erbium laser therapy can cause faster healing compared to CO2 which is within a week at most.
The possible side effects that you might observe after laser resurfacing might include swelling, bruising and some slight redness. Possible complications can include hyperpigmentation on the treated area, milia and sometimes the formation of cold sores.
When you want to make a safe and better change in your skin, you can always trust in the good service from dermatologists in Delhi.
