Uterine sarcoma: Symptoms, General Information on Uterine sarcoma Uterine sarcoma: Symptoms, diagnosis and treatment
Posted on Oct 15, 2015
The uterus is part of the female reproductive system. It is a hollow organ, about the size and shape of a medium-sized pear having 3 layers, the inner layer called endometrium, the outer layer called serosa and the middle layer called myometrium.

Uterine sarcoma is a very rare kind of cancer that develops in the uterine muscles or in tissues that support the uterus. It is different from endometrial cancer, in which cancer cells start growing inside the lining of the uterus. Uterine sarcomas can be classified into endometrial stromal sarcomas, undifferentiated sarcomas and uterine leiomyosarcomas.

Carcinosarcoma is another form of cancer that starts in the uterus. These cancers begin in the endometrium and have features of both sarcomas and carcinomas.

Symptoms associated with uterine sarcoma

Abnormal bleeding from the vagina is the most common symptom of uterine sarcoma. However, you must consult your doctor if you notice any one of the following symptoms:

Tests and diagnosis of uterine sarcoma

Tests and diagnosis of uterine sarcoma include:
  • Body checkup and medical history: Your doctor will perform a physical examination to check for anything unusual such lumps. Moreover, he will be willing to go through your medical history including past illnesses and treatments.
  • Pelvic exam: Your doctor will examine the vagina, cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, and rectum for any irregularities.
  • Pap test: It is a procedure to collect cells from the surface of the cervix and vagina. These cells are then viewed under a microscope to discover any abnormality. This procedure is also known as Pap smear test.
  • Ultrasound examination: It is a procedure where the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and bladder are examined to look for tumors.
  • Dilatation and curettage: in this procedure, a patient is given general anesthesia while the doctor dilates the cervix and uses a special surgical instrument to scrape the endometrial tissue from inside the uterus.
  • Endometrial biopsy: The process involves removal of endometrial tissue by inserting a thin, flexible tube through the cervix and into the uterus. The sample is then sent to a laboratory for testing.

Treatment options for uterine sarcoma

Treatment options for uterine sarcoma include the following:
  • Surgery: It is the most common and recommended treatment for uterine sarcoma. However, some patients may be given chemotherapy or radiation therapy after surgery to kill any remaining cancer cells.
  • Radiation therapy: It is a cancer treatment that uses high energy x-rays or other types of radiation to kill cancer cells or stop them from growing. There are two types of radiation therapy, External and Internal.
  • Chemotherapy: It is a cancer treatment that uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells and stops them from dividing. When chemotherapy is taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle, the drugs enter the bloodstream and can reach cancer cells throughout the body.
  • Hormone therapy: It is a cancer treatment that removes hormones or blocks their action and stops cancer cells from growing.

There is a high possibility that uterine sarcoma may reappear after the treatment. Therefore, it is important that you follow-up with your doctor to reduce the chances of recurrent uterine sarcoma.
