Eye examination: Why you need it and its importance
Posted on Oct 15, 2015
Regular eye examination is important, regardless of your age or your physical health. During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye specialist does much more than just determining your prescription for eye glasses or contact lenses. The doctor will check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

Who should go for eye examination?

Eye examinations are an important part of health maintenance for everyone. Adults should have their eyes tested to keep their prescriptions current and to check for early signs of eye disease.

Eye examination for children plays a crucial role in ensuring normal vision development and academic achievement. Vision is closely linked to the learning process. Children with undetected vision problems often will have trouble with their schoolwork. Many times, children will not report vision problems simply because they don’t understand normal vision.

If your child is performing poorly at school, be sure to have his or her eyes examined by an eye specialist who specializes in children’s vision to rule out an underlying cause.

Signs that need an eye examination

Ideally, an eye examination every year should help you to stay on top of your eye health, but some people might need more than one. Vision can change quite a bit over the course of a year, especially for the older people, and it is important to know when you need to schedule an exam. Below are some of the signs from which you can determine the timing of your eye examination:
  • Your eyes are red, dry, itchy, or you are seeing spots, flashes of light, or floaters.
  • You have diabetes or another health condition that affects your eyes. Also, if you have a family history of conditions like diabetes or glaucoma you may need exams more often, especially when you start to age.
  • You don’t remember the last time you had had an eye exam. If it’s been longer than a year, you’re overdue.
  • You experience difficulty driving at night and seeing street signs in the dark.
  • You have eye strain, headaches or blurred vision after spending an extended amount of time in front of a computer screen.
  • You get motion sick, dizzy, or have trouble following a moving target.
  • You hold books or the newspaper further away from your face or close one eye to read them clearly.
  • You notice any changes in your vision, especially after an incident of head trauma.

If you have been experiencing any of the above signs, it is time for you to have an eye examination. An eye examination benefits more than just your eyes. Your eye specialist can detect a range of diseases like diabetes and cancer just by looking at your eyes.
