How to beat the heat this summer?

In summers when temperature is highest and the extreme heat of sun can not be avoided, protection and extra care are required. As summer season causes health concerns such as heat cramps, dehydration, heat stroke and exhaustion, people do many things to avoid these problems and here are some preventing tips to be considered:

  • Stay indoor in cool and air-conditioned environment as it will protect you from the heat outside.
  • Prepare a half filled bucket or tub with ice cubes and water to soak feet and hands. You can also add aroma oils for more options. Alternatively, you can clean your face with cold water as it cools down the entire body.
  • Drink cold beverages and sports drinks which have rich electrolytes so as to replace minerals and cool down the body temperature at any time.
  • Have fruits juices and fresh fruits like pineapple, strawberries, grapes and oranges.
  • Stay away from spicy foods and have light meals.
  • Things like coffee and alcohol, all are harmful for your health in summers. Instead try ice tea or green tea.
  • Have curd, lassi, mango or ice cream shakes, or thandai.
  • Drink lemon water as lemon is alkaline and cools down body heat.
  • Give your kids cool and fresh cut fruits such as mango, melon, plums, pear and peaches.
  • Eat healthy, light, small and frequent meals with fresh salads.
  • Wear covered with loose fitting, light colored and light weight clothing which reflects heat and keeps body cool, maintain normal temperatures of body and protects you from the sun’s harmful UV rays.
  • In summers, going out in the afternoon, if not urgent, should be avoided because this is the peak time of sun.
  • Also keep windows closed during afternoons in summers.
  • Use a hat or scarf or an umbrella when out in the sun.
  • Always carry a water bottle when you go out and keep drinking water at frequent intervals.
  • Use reflective sunshades in the car and always park your car in shades.
  • Taking a cool shower twice a day will help lower body temperature.
  • Keep curtains and blinds closed during the day to block the heat and direct sunlight.
  • Use compact fluorescent light bulbs because they reduce the heat and save electricity.
  • Do exercise when heat and humidity is at its lowest and take water after 20 minutes of exercise.
  • Always keep glucose or electoral water handy which helps in restoring all the minerals and salts required to regulate the body.
  • Never leave kids and pets inside your car even when the windows are down as the temperature of the car is always higher than outside.
  • Use a mud water bowl in balcony or at terrace for birds as it keeps the water cool.
  • Make sure you keep your plants in shades during summers and water them twice a day.

As we all know that nobody can escape from sun’s heat and its effects but still can get enough relief by considering and following these tips.
