Psoriasis and Eczema (skin allergy) - Are they same?
Posted on Aug 28, 2015
Both psoriasis and eczema are different forms of skin disorders. However, some people, including dermatologists think they are the same even though they are different. Each of these disorders normally starts with patchy, red, itchy skin.

There are two types of psoriasis that can affect children and adults. The first is what is known as plaque psoriasis. This type of psoriasis causes the person to develop red coloured lesions in conjunction with having a silver scaling which will flake away and the skin underneath it will bleed. This type of psoriasis is the most common among those who suffer from psoriasis. The silver scales that are present are normally known as plaques, scales, or flakes. The scales are nothing more than extra skin that is produced when the body experiences a substance imbalance at which time the skin cells will grow uncontrollably.

The other type of psoriasis, which is less common, is known as guttate psoriasis. This type of psoriasis is more common in children and younger adults. It begins on the skin as red bumps which are about the same size as your little finger. This will generally occur a few weeks following some type of infection. Both types should be treated by a medical professional upon being diagnosed.

Eczema on the other hand is generally a condition that occurs during infancy that may get better over time. If you childhood eczema does not improve before puberty, there is a possibility that you will have further outbreaks in your adult life.

Eczema is frequently caused by external factors such as soap, detergent, make-up, jewellery allergens in the air or food allergy. However, it will depend on the type of eczema you are suffering from. In some people eczema can be caused by stress or allergic condition. While it can appear anywhere, eczema normally appears on the face, knees, neck, or elbows and starts as dry, red, itchy skin. Persistent scratching normally worsens the condition making the skin much thicker. An outbreak of eczema usually occurs quickly and without warning, but also tends to also go away very rapidly.

Psoriasis and eczema both make the patients feel down and depressed as they occur because of the itching, redness and dry, flaky skin that come with both. Not only are they both uncomfortable, they can be extremely embarrassing, particularly if it occurs on the face.

Psoriasis, however, will usually be due to a genetic link, and happens because of an imbalance inside of your body. Eczema tends to happen due to factors within your environment like being exposed to or using a product that can contain chemicals that are harsh. Eczema generally erupts in response to environmental factors such as exposure to products containing harsh chemicals.

Regardless of whether you have outbreaks of psoriasis or eczema, it is important that you consult a dermatologist for rapid treatment options. Without treatment, it can only get worse instead of better. Seeking medical treatment and advice is the best course of action you can take when suffering from either psoriasis or eczema.
