Laparoscopic Surgery for infertility: What to expect during diagnosis and treatment
Posted on Aug 25, 2015
Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure that involves making small incisions in the abdomen, through which the doctor inserts an instrument called laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin, fibre-optic tube, fitted with a light and camera. It enables the doctor to see the abdominal organs and sometimes make repairs without cutting a large potion which often requires a longer recovery time and hospital stay.

Your doctor may recommend laparoscopic surgery in order to diagnose and treat infertility. The surgery is normally performed after all the infertility tests have been completed.

If you are encountering pelvic pain, a sign of endometriosis, your doctor may recommend laparoscopic surgery to determine the source of the pain and possibly treat it by removing scar tissue.

The importance of laparoscopic surgery
Some of the causes of infertility such as endometriosis can only be diagnosed using a laparoscopic surgery. It not only allows the doctor to have an inside look but also have a biopsy of suspicious growths or cysts.

How Is Laparoscopic surgery performed?

A laparoscopic surgery is performed in a hospital under the influence of general anaesthesia. You’ll be instructed not to eat at least 8 or more hours before your scheduled surgery.

You’ll get an IV through which fluids and medication will be delivered to help you relax. The anaesthesiologist will administer general anaesthesia and you’ll soon fall asleep.

Once anaesthesia takes over, your laparoscopic surgeon will make a small cut around the belly button. Through this cut, a needle will be used to fill your abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. This helps the doctor to see the organs and move the surgical instruments. Once your abdomen is filled with gas, the surgeon will then place the laparoscope through the cut to look around at your pelvic organs.

What happens to you during and after laparoscopic surgery?

As you’ll be under general anaesthesia, you’ll not experience any pain during the procedure. However, you may have a sore throat once you wake up in addition to soreness around the abdomen.

You’ll probably go home on the same day as your surgery and will be advised to take it easy for at least two days. You may need a week or two to recover if many repairs were made. Your doctor will prescribe pain medication and antibiotics.

Risks of laparoscopic surgery

As with any surgical procedure, a laparoscopic surgery too comes with few risks including:

Post laparoscopic surgery result

The laparoscopic surgeon will visually evaluate the pelvic organs and surrounding abdominal organs. He/she will look for cysts, fibroids, scar tissue or endometrial growths. Even if there are no signs of endometriosis or other problems, the surgeon may remove a sample of tissue to be tested. Post surgery, your doctor will explain all the options for getting pregnant. In the case of endometriosis, the removal of scar tissue may make it possible to get pregnant without further treatment.
