Being a dietician: One of the toughest jobs on earth
Posted on Aug 25, 2015
Food - arguably the greatest love on earth. This love is indestructible, inseparable and the most sincere. It is a dietitian’s job to make the obese get over this love. Obesity is one of the greatest problems hampering human beings because it comes with a number of morbidities that includes diabetes, blood pressure, arthritis, heart disorders and bone problems. Therefore, a dietician holds a very important position in today's society.

The Indian diet is quite balanced in itself, but sadly in the last few years, many have switched to the western diet laced with aerated drinks, pizzas and pastas which is the sole reason for the sudden spike in obesity cases. Also many have lost control of calories eating too much of rice and wheat which mostly gets stored as fat in the body. Studies have shown that Indians are prone to abdominal obesity due to a gene we carry. Hence, it becomes all the more important to be careful to walk the line of obesity.

A dietician practices in clinics, hospitals or specialty centres and assists kids, elderly, the sick, athletes and the obese to control their calories and nutrition. They are sometimes called nutritionists because they help patients carry out a customized food plan that is drawn up especially for them. This diet plan is devised considering one’s occupation, age, weight, fitness, disorders and stress levels.

Apart from practicing in clinics or hospitals, dieticians may also be employed in defence establishments, educational institutions, residential schools, factories, sports establishments, and health and fitness centres. Research in diet and nutrition is also an option. International organizations like the UN and some Indian NGOs employ dieticians to work on new diets.

As a dietician, if you enjoy writing you may start a blog with health and nutrition and write about diet plans and weight loss tips. In fact most of India’s leading news papers, magazines and television channels employ their own special dieticians to write columns and host programs on weight loss and answer queries.

You must possess good communication skills and plethora of patience if you want to be a recognized dietician. A lot of convincing and persuasion is needed to motivate obese people to follow dietary restrictions. Before you take up this tedious job, you need to ensure that you are fit and healthy as patients will look for practice and prescribe.

Mostly, diets and planned for the western countries. These have to monitored and customized for the Indian. A majority of Indians are vegetarians and hence they demand a balanced diet to suit their body and life style. Hence, as a dietician you will have to be on your toes to try different approaches and experiment.
