Diabetologists: Lesser known medical professionals
Posted on Aug 25, 2015
Diabetologists are usually medical doctors, like paediatricians and endocrinologists, who specialize in treating and providing care to patients suffering from diabetes. There are four major types of diabetes, classified as Type 1, Type 2, gestational, and pre-diabetes. In our modern day lifestyle, diabetes has become a very common condition.
A person suffering from diabetes has a high blood sugar level as the insulin in the body does not function optimally. Insulin is a hormone that helps your body to convert sugar, starches and other food products you consume into energy. Since this condition directly impacts your normal life, it is important to seek help of a diabetologist.
Untreated diabetes can lead to a number of health conditions, including serious ones. Therefore, it is important to receive the right treatment and on time. Diabetes is a chronic condition and controlling some factors like quitting smoking, doing exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight can contribute a long way in treating the condition.
Why a diabetologist? In some places, diabetology is not recognized as a medical specialty. Therefore, the requirements needed to become a diabetologist may vary. In India too, most of us are not familiar with the term diabetologist because it is relatively a new phenomenon. If you search over the internet for a diabetologist, you would come across a list of such specialists in your city. These are specialist medical practitioners who have got trained in internal medicine or endocrinology.
When you visit a diabetologist, the doctor may conduct a clinical evaluation to understand the symptoms specific to a patient. You may be asked several questions to evaluate your medical history. A diabetologist may ask you about your personal habits, exercise, diet, etc. This information is critical to give the right treatment and hence, you should provide as much precise detail as you can. Once a doctor gets familiar with your symptoms and patient history, he will be able to provide you with a customized treatment to help you lead a normal life.
Once your treatment plan is made, you would be required to follow-up with your diabetologist at regular intervals for further evaluation and to assure the diabetes treatment is going in the right direction. A diabetologist may use diagnostic testing to confirm the treatment is showing positive results and to screen for early symptoms of diabetes complications, such as circulatory and vision disorders. However, your diabetologist may change the treatment plan doesn’t show desired results.
Besides providing individualized treatment to patients, a diabetologist may also be involved in diabetes research. Research helps to come up with newer ways to tackle the condition more effectively.
