Life after cancer: Take care of your body

After you have won a hard-fought battle with the cancer as a cancer survivor, you are eager to get back into good health. But the key is long-term health so that you can enjoy rest of the years in a healthy manner.
The suggestions for cancer survivors are not different from those who want to lead a healthy life: Dietary changes, balanced weight, physical activities, etc. These strategies contain added benefits for cancer survivors. You can transform the early struggles into smooth survivorship. It’s all about recuperating and recuperating well. For that you can do the following things:
Regular exercise can boost morale and fasten your recovery process. A cancer survivor who exercises daily may experience:
- Increased endurance
- Limited signs of stress or depression
- Less anxiety
- Improved self-confidence and self-esteem
- Reduced pain
- Improved sleep
Check with your doctor before following any exercise regime. Incorporating physical activities will make your life more active. You can start with the simplest of exercises, walking.
As a side effect of cancer treatment, it may happen that you don’t feel like exercising. Fatigue is normal in these circumstances. When you feel right, just hit the road or nearby park.
Eat a balanced diet
Your diet must include fruits & vegetables along with whole grains. When it comes to selecting your diet, doctors recommend that cancer survivors must:
- Consume close to 3 cups of fruits & vegetables everyday
- Choose omega-3 fatty acids instead of saturated fats or trans fats
- Eat high protein diet including fish, eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes
- Have whole grains, legumes etc to complete the daily requirement of carbohydrates
The combination of these foods will keep your vitamin and nutrient levels healthy and make your body strong. Still if you require a multivitamin, consult your oncologist.
Maintain a healthy weight
You would have lost some weight during treatment. Talk to your oncologist on ways of getting it back, one of which could be making food more appealing and easier to eat. Your doctor may involve a dietitian to devise a diet chart to gain weight safely.
Stop using tobacco
Don’t even think of touching it! Smoking or chewing tobacco makes you vulnerable to several types of cancer. Stopping it now can save you from cancer recurrence and lower the risk of developing secondary cancer. Your doctor can play a pivotal role in helping you quit tobacco for good.
Still want to drink alcohol?
If you have to drink just for the sake of it, do so in limited quantity. A drink per day for men above 65 and two drinks per day for men younger than 65 will be adequate. However, the debate is still on whether alcohol offers certain benefits. Discuss the pros and cons consuming alcohol with your doctor.
You may worry that you have to change your lifestyle completely to achieve these goals. It is best if you incorporate these strategies slowly. Easing into this lifestyle will not be an issue then.
