World Breast Feeding week is an yearly celebration which is celebrated from 1 to 7 August. This came up with the goal of promoting breast feeding for the first six months of the new born baby which provides various health benefits.
Breast Feeding is the feeding of babies and young children with milk from a women's breast. It is a natural means by which a baby receives nourishment. Breast feeding can begin immediately after birth. The baby is given to the mother and feeding starts soon as the baby shows interest. It is highly recommendable for the new born babies as it is very necessary for the infants.
The new born babies need breastfeeding the most as it provides the necessary nutrition to the new born resulting in improved cognitive development and lower the value of obesity in the adult stage. The duration of the breastfeeding should be ten to fifteen minutes on each breast. After the age of six months, babies can start food other than the breast milk and hence breastfeeding can be gradually stopped.
As per some statistical information, deaths of an estimated 8,00,000 children's under the age of five could be prevented every year with the increase in breastfeeding to the new born babies upto the age of 6 months. Babies who are not breastfed are almost six times more prone to death due to diseases than to those who receive at least some breast milk.
Mothers too have positive effect of breast feeding on them, it results in less blood loss in the following delivery and better uterus shrinkage. Breast releases beneficial hormones into the mother's body, this hormone release can help to enable sleep. Health Organisations promote breastfeeding to babies upto the age of six months minimum.
Medical conditions that do not allow breastfeeding are rare but the mothers who take medications or drugs should not breast feed and consult to the doctor.
New born babies tend to express their demand for feeding every 2-3 hours for the first few weeks. The mother can produce her own milk and then it should be kept preserved for the later use, it can be stored in freezers and specialized containers. Milk banks are also established where some women's can donate or give their milk. This allows some mothers who cannot feed milk but can provide it from the milk banks to the babies.
Support for the breastfeeding is appreciable by some of the organizations. WHO states that the Breast milk is the best and the ideal food for the healthy growth and development of a child. So, breast feeding is very important and essential process for both the mother and the child. It should be practiced by every mother and initiatives should be taken to increase its role and social power.
Breast feeding promotion is a movement that came about in the modern period of time in response to high rates of bottle feeding among mothers. The " Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative" is a start up of the WHO that seeks to promote breastfeeding among mothers who give birth to the young ones in the hospitals.
