World Environment day is observed all around the globe on 5th June, to encourage worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment from the harmful causes. First observed in 1974,from then on it has been the main campaign observed by NGOs, governments, corporation and communities in around of 143 countries to spread awareness and take actions against increasing environmental issues such as of global warming, human overpopulation, marine pollution, wildlife crime and sustainable consumption to make this world a better and healthier place to live.
Designated by the UN general assembly in 1972, the day was observed from 1974 with a theme of 'Only One Earth'. The day is hosted by different countries in every different year to undergo major environment activities such as from cleaning to planting trees to make is environment pollution free. The theme of 2017 world environment day is 'Connecting People to Nature - in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator' and the host country is Canada.
Threats on our Environment:
- Marine pollution- Marine pollution occurs by entry of harmful or potentially harmful substances in the ocean such chemicals, particles, industrial, agricultural and residential waste, the spread of invasive organisms and the spillage of oils. Marine pollution lead to the death of the marine creature which affects the ecological balance and also destroy the water quality.. Eighty percent of marine pollution comes from land.
- Wildlife crime-illegal cutting of trees, killing of animals for their skins and horns make the wildlife a major crime spot. Trees are our major provider of oxygen, cutting of trees directly affect humans. Killing of any species of animal will destroy the ecological balance which in turn will affect each and every living organism on earth.
- Global warming-Cutting of trees and over use of AC, Fridge which release CFCs are the major cause of global warming. Ozone layer which protects us from harmful ultraviolet rays are getting depleted increasing the cases of skin cancer and increasing the risk of other cancers.
- Use of plastic is the major cause of land and marine pollution, as plastic is non-biodegradable and it stays in land for many years making it a waste to encourage pollution.
Planting of trees, prevention of use of plastic items, cleaning of the river and ocean shores for filth and becoming a little sensible can reduce the pollution level to many degrees. In this environment day, let us pledge to 'Connect Nature to People' and allow all living organism to live a healthier life and let us live in a earth free of pollution.
