Male Reproductive System - A study of the testes
Posted on Apr 13, 2015
Testicles (or testes) are a pair of sperm-producing organs responsible for the health of the male reproductive system. They form a distinct part of the endocrine system because they secrete testosterone- necessary for maintaining libido, muscle strength, and bone density in males.

Hormone of the Testes
The testes are two oval-shaped organs (large grape size) which produce testosterone required for proper physical development in boys. It is the main androgen which stimulates masculine development. This hormone is involved in different processes that transform a boy to manhood including:
  • Growth of the Adam’s apple
  • Increase in height and muscle mass
  • Lowering of the voice
  • Active growth of male sex organs
  • Growth of body and facial hair

Apart from above mentioned functions, testosterone is fundamental in a variety of functions like:
  • Sperm production
  • Promoting healthy bone density
  • Maintaining muscle strength and mass
  • Maintaining libido

Production of testosterone
Both the hypothalamus and pituitary gland control the production and secretion of testosterone. The hypothalamus sends a signal to the pituitary gland to release follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone. Luteinizing hormone then starts producing testosterone. The hypothalamus alerts the pituitary gland to make less luteinizing hormone, which signals the testes to lower testosterone levels, if too much testosterone is produced.

Diseases associated with the Testes
One major and common health complication associated with the testes is Hypogonadism (lower levels of testosterone). The low production can cause a range of other problems including:

Hypogonadism can be of two types: Primary and Secondary. Primary means a deformity with the testicles, and secondary involves an issue in the pituitary gland that indirectly hampers testosterone production. These conditions may be the result of many things, most common of them is:

The testes play a pivotal role and are elemental for both the male reproductive system as well as the endocrine system. The hormone testosterone is constitutional to the healthy development of male physical characteristics.
