TYPICAL USAGE:
Cefixime is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. This medication is known as a cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (e.g., common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or overuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness. Take cefixime by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually once a day. In children, this medication may also be taken twice a day (every 12 hours).
SIDE EFFECTS:
Some of the side effects of cefixime include diarrhoea that is watery or bloody jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes) swelling, rapid weight gain, little or no urinating seizure (convulsions) fever, swollen gums, painful mouth sores, easy bruising, unusual bleeding pale or yellowed skin, dark coloured urine, confusion or weakness or severe skin reaction fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads (especially in the face or upper body) and causes blistering and peeling. Cefixime may also cause stomach pain, nausea, upset stomach, gas mild itching or rash headache or vaginal itching or discharge.
DRUG INTERACTION:
• Cefixime+amikacin- Amikacin can sometimes cause kidney damage and using it with a cephalosporin antibiotic like cefixime may increase that risk. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
• Cefixime+bumetanide- Cephalosporin antibiotics like cefixime can occasionally cause kidney problems, and using it with bumetanide may increase that risk. The interaction is more likely to occur when the cephalosporin is given at high doses by injection into the vein or when it is given to the elderly or individuals with pre-existing kidney function impairment.
• Cefixime+entecavir- Using entecavir together with cefixime may increase the blood levels of one or both medications. Contact your doctor if your condition changes or you experience increased side effects. You may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring by your doctor to safely use both medications.
• Cefixime+gentamicin- Gentamicin can sometimes cause kidney damage and using it with a cephalosporin antibiotic like cefixime may increase that risk. Talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns.
MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Cefixime is a cephalosporin antibiotic which acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall (outer coating of bacteria) synthesis and killing the bacteria, thereby reducing the infection.
