Bethanechol stimulates your bladder to empty. Bethanechol is used to treat urinary retention (difficulty urinating), which may occur after surgery, after delivering a baby, and in other situations. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have uncontrolled hyperthyroidism (an overactive thyroid) stomach ulcers asthma recently had bladder or intestinal surgery a blockage in your intestinal tract a slow heart rate or low blood pressure coronary artery disease epilepsy or any other seizure disorder or Parkinson's disease.

Typical Uses

Bethanechol is used to treat certain bladder problems such as the inability to urinate or empty the bladder completely due to certain causes (e.g., surgery, bladder muscle problems). It works by helping the bladder muscle to squeeze better, thereby improving your ability to urinate. This drug may also be used to treat heartburn. It works by helping the stomach muscles move food down out of the stomach faster and by increasing the strength of the muscle between the oesophagus and stomach (lower oesophageal sphincter). This helps prevent food/acid in the stomach from rising back into the oesophagus.

Mechanism of action

Bethanechol belongs to choline esters class of parasympathomimetics medicines. It functions similar to a natural chemical (neurotransmitter) named acetylcholine in the body. It relives urinary retention (holding urine in the bladder) by increasing the detrusor muscle (muscle which forms a layer of the wall of the bladder) contraction thereby facilitating urination.
