About Dr. Saumitra Rawat
Dr. Saumitra Rawat is one of the finest medical professionals India has produced in a long time. He is, by some distance, the most respected and admired doctor in India and abroad. At present, Dr. Rawat is the Head and Chairman of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant at prestigious Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. He is also serving as Honorary Consultant Surgeon at Christie's NHS Foundation Hospital, Manchester, UK. For his renowned work he was appointed Member of Court of Examiner at the Royal College of Surgeon, England.
After completing his MBBS and MS from well-known Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi, Dr. Rawat went to England for super specialist training, where he was immensely trained at top-notch centers. Post a successful career in the United Kingdom, he returned to India in 2012.
Dr. Saumitra Rawat played an instrumental role in incorporating laparoscopic and robotic surgery for gastrointestinal cancer at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Along with his teammates, he performed the first robotic hepatico-jejunostomy in India and first low anterior resection in North India. Furthermore, Dr. Rawat is amongst the first to perform robotic and laparoscopic Oesophagectomy in North India with groundbreaking results. He also created Enhanced recovery programme for cancer surgery.
Dr. Saumitra Rawat also possesses a significant teaching experience. He has trained upcoming healthcare practitioners across the globe in laparoscopic surgery. He was Surgical Tutor of Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has been in the faculty and convener for various Skill Courses of Royal College of Surgeons of England. He was Examiner for Medical students at the University of Leeds, Undergraduate trainer for University of Leeds, Glasgow and Manchester and Postgraduate trainer for Glasgow and Liverpool.
Dr. Saumitra Rawat has held honorary positions in various professional bodies. He is the member and fellow of multiple medical organizations such as Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, British Medical Association, British Transplant Society, Royal College of Surgeons of England, Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland etc.

Dr. Saumitra Rawat was awarded Ed Eundum Fellowship of Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has received the Academic excellence award by Delhi Medical Association and was felicitated for delivering a keynote lecture by Indian Medical Association. Patna Medical College honoured him in their 88th annual college day with oration award. Laxmibai National University of physical Education invited him as chief guest and honoured him with oration award. Given his work as one of the important leader in Medicine, he was invited to participate in Young Leaders Conclave-Vision 2020, where highly respected and influential speakers included Shri Narendra Modi and Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. He was also conferred Distinguish alumni by Maulana Azad Medical College, Vishisht Chikitsa Ratan Award by DMA and “Bundelkhand Gaurav Samman” for his extraordinary contributions and devotion to the field of Medicine. He has been conferred Padma Shri in 2015 by the President of India.
