Test Details & Preparation

  • A thyroid panel is used to evaluate thyroid function or help diagnose hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism due to various thyroid disorders.

  • A thyroid panel consists of different tests including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (free T4), total or free triiodothyronine (total or free T3).

  • A thyroid panel is performed when symptoms such as weight gain, hair loss, constipation, menstrual irregularity in women, weight loss, weakness, diarrhoea etc suggest hypo or hyperthyroidism due to a condition affecting the thyroid.

  • A blood sample is obtained by inserting a needle into a vein in the arm.

  • No test preparation is required for a thyroid panel. Certain medications can interfere with the tests included in the panel, however, so tell the doctor about any drugs being taken.

  • When thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) concentrations are increased, the thyroid will make and release inappropriate amounts of T4 and T3 and the person may experience symptoms associated with hyperthyroidism.

  • When there is decreased production of thyroid hormones, the person may experience symptoms of hypothyroidism.
