Test Details & Preparation
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a male hormone that is best known for its role in causing male pattern baldness and prostate problems. It is an androgen, as is testosterone that is responsible to maintain bone density, fat distribution, muscle strength and mass, red blood cell production, sex drive and sperm production. Aging men have higher levels of DHT that can lead to hair loss and prostate dysfunction.
DHT is three times more potent than testosterone and is crucial to maintaining masculine characteristics and mitigating the effects of oestrogen in men. This test will give you a better understanding of how much DHT is in your blood.
5'- Alpha Dihydrotestosterone test measures the potent form of testosterone, Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This test is useful for monitoring patients receiving 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor therapies or chemotherapy and evaluating patients with possible 5 alpha-reductase deficiencies. Patients with prostate disease often receive treatment with a 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor which may require monitoring.
High results are linked with hair loss in men and women and prostate problems in men including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), an increase in the size of the prostate. Lower levels indicate low libido in men.
